The full Digsby Review

digsby_196x196 Yesterday I mentioned that I began using Digsby instead of pidgin for my IM needs. So now that I’ve had a little time to play around with it I figured I would give it a full review. First off the bat it takes some getting used to, its not as straight forward as aim or pidgin. One thing I have to mention is that they just added Facebook chat. Which adding it is amazing but how quickly they added it was quick, less then a week I think. I already mentioned the email yesterday so I won’t mention that again. But go ahead and hit the jump for the full review.

digpro So this is the buddy list, and as you can see as you scroll over the buddy names their away message pops up along with their profile. So no clicking on anything to view profile and away messages which is nice. You can also see that the Facebook add on and email are up at the top. I’m using the Aeroglass theme from here.

buddyface Next is on to the Facebook part. When you click on the Facebook link you get a sidebar that pops up with whatever you chose to include basically what you have when you log into your Facebook profile.

convo This is the conversation window, its pretty straight forward. From the conversation window you can view their profile, IM, send them a file, send them an email or even video chat (I haven’t tested it out)

conov2 This is the little notification that pops up when somebody IMs you or sends you a message. Its pretty awesome as you can reply right through it and don’t have to open the window. I found it great to use when I was in Illustrator or Photoshop so it wouldn’t slow anything down.

So now for the bad. Some of the things that I’ve gotten used to is auto spell correct. Now while Digsby has spell checker it doesn’t doesn’t auto correct. For example if I typed “teh” I would want it to auto correct to “the”. Another thing is that when changing font the window freezes for about 45 seconds which can get annoying, luckily I don’t do that often. Also you can’t have a buddy notification for just one buddy. For some of my friends I like to have a little pop up notification when they sign on, but not for everybody. Anyway these are the only bad things that I can think of, however you can submit your ideas of what you want to the Digsby wishlist and people can vote on if your addon will get put in or not. Anyway if I was to grade all of the IM systems I have used aim would get 3 out of 10, pidgin 7 out of 10 and Digsby would get a 9/9.5 out of 10.
